Yes! Day

Wake up, wake up!
Let’s get dressed for breakfast at the Stinger.
Post-Nutella-dipped berries, it’s time.
Grab your Nikes for the journey; lace up!
Shades for the glare — and the lewk.

On to FAO Schwartz for Jelly Cat Diner.
Ditch the pizza stuffie line
for plush pigeons on key chains,
and rain clouds in sherpa with embroidered frowns,
and a cake-hoisting bunny, eye-rollingly cute.
No you can't get all three!
Okay okay yes, yes, get in line.
Don’t forget the BIG piano! Get in line, it's worth it.
What do you mean you don't know what "Big" is?
Ugh Okay; we'll watch it with Dad when we get home.
It's a Classic!

Next it's MoMA for the red and white soup cans,
the endless esoteric immersion rooms
of unexplained art installations
and the Monet interspersed with Picasso.
Yes I understand that you don't understand;
it's okay to have questions.

But, Yes, you can eat the silver-wrapped candy
that represents both the body of Christ
and those of AIDS victims.
Yes, we will go to the MoMA Gift Shop!
It's part of the museum, after all.

Then it's Tololache for the birria tacos
and tableside guac.
Yes, you can get the hibiscus agua fresca.
Yes, we'd like an extra basket
of fresh-fried tortilla chips.

Subsequently, it's off to the
25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee
for the laughs
and the long words.

Cut through Central Park
— yes I see those playgrounds —
for the greenery and boulders.
Keep walking, we've a ways to go!

Walk along 5th for the metropolitan views.
Roller Rabbit for the prints,
pencil cases and vibes.
Yes, you can get the claw clip
with the purple monkeys.
No, I can't believe it's $38.

Next, Noglu for pistachio donuts,
cinnamon buns and chocolate eclairs.
Yes you can get all three.
Just hold the wheat!

Zip over to Zabars for the deli buffet
and live jazz quartet in the streets.
Jet over to Glace for the queue,
befriend the queue-ees,
and score the frozen chocolate
and a stroll through $9.00 per quarter-pound
'penny candy' bins for you.
For me, it’s Amalfi lemons
with torched meringue halos.

Take that last sip, savor that last bite,
because, Yes, we're off to go change
—No stopping now! —
for a fancy city dinner that Dad reserved.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Raise a spoon, why not,
and let’s cheers, again and again,
to the splendors of New York!

Poet, writer, photographer and slightly distracted day-dreamer who muses on (gestures at everything) from the petty to the profound. On a semi-serious, fully earnest search for meaning in the mayhem. Perimenopausal, melanin-deprived, irony-enhanced recovering perfectionist Type A+ millennial woman. She balances the ever-continuing quest to Know Better/Do Better, with the distinct ego-death of parenting a smart, full-throated child who was raised to know the power of her voice. Mothering a teen means catching a side-eye in almost every interaction. Diana navigates the minutiae of everyday life through seeking the magical in the mundane. Follow along and laugh with her as the world flames out!
