Final Degustation

"Final Degustation," an ode to the last solid meal before a much-delayed and avoided quadruple tertiary molar extraction surgery. Written Thursday, October 29, 2026, Poem #302 in a series of 365 poems written by Diana Ludwick in 2026. Photo: "X," by Diana Ludwick © 2026."

Final Degustation
Photo: "Final Degustation," by Diana Ludwick © 2026: a brown bag of duck fat fries and chicken fillets with chipotle ranch and ketchup, a final meal before surgery.

Dispatch air-dried chicken fillets
Dredge through buttermilk
Dust in rice flour.
Duck fat, in the fryer
Diced potatoes, dual dunks:
Dip the cage twice into roiling lipids.
Door Dasher, my Dasher
Deliver me my dinner.
Dignified, hold back from devouring:
Dip tenders into Chipotle ranch
Delicate, diligent, deliberate bites.
Devour, teeth gnashing, reckless ripping.
Diana’s Definitive Degustation:
Decidedly decadent deep-fried delights.
