Numbers

This week
a very large number
is making the rounds
through my social algos.

62,000,000.
62 million.

Per CNN, there were:
62 million.
62 million hits.

62 million hits in a month.
Hits to one specific website.

A site referred to as:
‘Rape Academy.’

Before you start —
Please, just don’t.

I am, truly,
technologically
and even mathematically
aware enough.

I already know
— I really do —
that this
troublesome tally
can include
repeat visitors
and bots
scraping the ’net
and other
metric noise.

And that is relevant,
how?
Is that the point,
here?
A peer review of metrics?

Does it matter
if the webpage hit count
represents:
62 million men
Or 620,000
Or 62,000
Or 620?
Or 62?
Or Six men?

There exists,
in 2026,
a website.
Run by men.

One with
the sole purpose
of showing other men
how to drug and rape
their own wives.

A place out there
on the World Wide Web
where criminals
can exchange
stories of their successes.

A safe space to vent
their frustrations, too,
when a dosed evening tea
proves not strong enough
to fully knock out their victim.

Drugged women
Raped women
Abused women
Harmed women
Underestimated women
Discarded women
Are out there.
In unknown numbers.

These women, us
we are at risk, in danger
at all times of our lives.
In part because of this site.

And these men
the ones behind
the convenient masks
of civility, of wedlock
— who lurk on the webs
and in the beds —
are at large
and largely unhindered.

Because of Society.
Our world's focus
— Men's focus —
has been mistargeted on:
metrics and minimizing
denial and deflecting.
And on Not All Men-ing
and I'm a Good Man-ing
and What Can I Even Do?-ing.

We will likely never have
a pat scientific answer
to the number of women
caught in this particular
sunken place created by,
yes, Men.

This is not about numbers.
This is about hiding
behind figures.
Arguing about data quality?
Not here, my bud.
Save that level of
measurement skepticism
for the office, for the lab,
for the scientific journals.

If we’re focused
on numbers
Then we’re
missing the humans.

And we,
the Women
with our eyes open
and our hearts aching,
we feel it.

And I, for one,
care and roil and rage.
I scream for justice
on behalf of the:
Six women
or the 62
or the 620
or the 62,000
or the 620,000 women
who have been betrayed,
failed, let down, forgotten.

I, and so many women with me,
share the horror of the fates of:
Our Sisters
Our Mothers
Our Neighbors
Our Church Ladies
Our Bosses
Our Daughters
Our Teachers
Our Grandmas
who have been,
unknowingly in most cases,
trespassed against so deeply.

Whether it’s one
or a million
Perpetrators.

Whether it’s one
or a million
Victims.

For me,
where is the inflection point,
the point of no return?
It's any integer — any whole number
of humans involved
in unholy crimes
greater than zero.
That is the only tally
that matters.

Poet, writer, photographer and slightly distracted day-dreamer who muses on (gestures at everything) from the petty to the profound. On a semi-serious, fully earnest search for meaning in the mayhem. Perimenopausal, melanin-deprived, irony-enhanced recovering perfectionist Type A+ millennial woman. She balances the ever-continuing quest to Know Better/Do Better, with the distinct ego-death of parenting a smart, full-throated child who was raised to know the power of her voice. Mothering a teen means catching a side-eye in almost every interaction. Diana navigates the minutiae of everyday life through seeking the magical in the mundane.
