Freak
“Freak,” a note on winter's last snow, written March 12, poem 071 in a series of 365 poems written by Diana Ludwick in 2026. Photo, "Mid-day Winterland" by Diana Ludwick (c) 2026.
It's March twelfth and
yesterday it was mid-80s.
Today had other plans.
I drove to my meeting
through slushy grey rain
and came home to snow.
Mother Nature has pulled
a fast one on us all.
Back indoors, I opted
to steal a quiet moment
and absorb this freak storm,
this last bit of winter.
I watched as big clumps
of velvet flakes cascaded
onto verdant spruce limbs,
tucking into spring with a chill.
I stare out my windows steeped
in a private snow globe moment.
I know this fuzzy white blanket
will be gone by dinner.
And by six,
it feels a dream,
the forest once again
moist and green.
