“Pocket,” an interpolation of Leonard Cohen's Anthem with my real-time horror of discovering a hole in the basement wall big enough for a fox or a human to enter, prompting memories of Wild Things and fears of invasion, written Wednesday, October 14, 2026 poem 287 in a series of 365 poems written by
I spy a pocket universe
"There is a crack..."
Enshrouded in darkness
Eyes seek the meeting place
where walls kiss the floor above
"...a crack in everything"
Neck pivots upwards,
drawn by the shock
of lumens registered
despite standing
in my cellar, switch 'Off'
"That's how the light gets in"
We've had a breakthrough
it appears
The demolition crew
has pierced our wall
cracked the barrier
between one realm
and another
And Where the Wild Things Are?
They are here
front seat to my chest freezer
backstage access
to our Christmas tree,
in vertical storage
eternal verdant flora
the mark of a wizard
or a chemist
in Pearl River Delta
at a faux foliage and fir factory
in Guangdong Province
I will lie awake tonight haunted
by the light
that filled my eyes
from the depths of the darkness
of my windowless basement
and will stay in my soul
as I wonder
of the creatures
that will make their way home
through the pocket universe
in the wall
left by demolition crews
who care not
about holes in the foundation
portals
into my inner sanctum
left open
and unguarded
I wish
this were
a metaphor
The hole
is
there
The Wild Things
Are
Where?????
