Protein
“Protein,” written February 25, about the impossibility of keeping up with recommended protein consumption for women in the 40+ category. Poem 056 in a series of 365 poems written by Diana Ludwick in 2026. Photo, "Arugula Salad with Insufficient Protein," by Diana Ludwick (c) 2026.
We've all heard
the Commandments:
Eat Protein
Early, Often, Always.
However much I'm eating
it's definitely not close to
one hundred fifty grams
I'm already behind.
I'm trying, I swear
but there's no way
that I can keep up
with Chex cereal
for breakfast
and salad
for lunch
I will need to eat
half a steer
at supper
but procurement
is tough.
So here's my
mid-day attempt:
toasted walnuts
atop arugula
chunks of Roquefort
diced Honeycrisp
it's not sufficient
but it's tasty
and that will have to be
enough.
